Summer Scout Camps – Salomon X Ultra Boots Review

Aside from being a travel blogger, a vast amount of my life is dedicated to running three sections within a scouts group.  I love the great outdoors and getting children out and enjoying mother nature is one of my real passions.  The saying “there is no such thing as bad weather, just wrong clothing” is one you will hear me sharing with my scouts and their parents all the time.  This summer we are taking lots of adventures over the UK and with the start of the British summertime, you know that rain will inevitably follow.  So when making a list of things I required for our summer adventures, waterproof boots were really high on my list.

Our summer outdoor adventures

We started our Scouts group to give the opportunity of new experiences to children who would miss out on these things most of us take for granted.  Camping is something rarely done within the Muslim community and it gives us great pride that we are raising a new generation who see camping as part and parcel of travel experiences.  This July we have had two planned scouts camps, a night away with our own group and a longer 4 day Jamboree.  We had been hopeful that we may have good weather but on both occasions, rain was forecast and fell in abundance.  We camped at the Great Tower, Lake District and Kiblestone Scouts camp, Staffordshire and both involved a lot of walking, across of different terrain and usually in slippery muddy conditions.

What to do look for in outdoor boots

In addition to scouting activities, as a family, we do a fair amount of walking but never in mountains. So I decided I didn’t need a full-size boot but my requirements were a mid-sized boot, lightweight, comfortable and most importantly waterproof.  The last pair of boots I had fitted all the requirements except for being breathable and waterproof.  Doc loves Goretex products and raves about the material so it a must for him that the boot which I choose should be Goretex.    After trawling through a number of outdoor shops and online a found a perfect pair, the Salomon X Ultra 2 GTX boots from Millet Sports.

What did I think of the Salomon X Ultra 2 boots?

The boots are lovely and really comfortable.  Throughout our camps, I rarely have a chance to sit down so having comfy footwear is a must.  The boots were really lightweight which makes them ideal for camping, not just for wearing but also if I am carrying them if I packed them in my rucksack. Lots of the walking boots often feel really formal, dark colours but these shoes had almost sports / fitness trainer feel to them so would be perfect for daily wear.  Throughout the Jamboree it rained, often for hours on end, and we were outdoors throughout the whole time. The boots were amazing, completely waterproof and durable even in really awful weather/terrain conditions.  one of my favourite thing about the boots was the fact they didn’t have laces and the pull string idea was perfect and it is surprising more shoes don’t use them (especially for children)  The sizing is a little small, I usually fit between a 7 – 8 but I got a size 8 which was a perfect fit especially if you are wearing thicker socks in winter.  The cost of the Salomon walking boots is on par with other good branded boots and really good value for money based on the performance this summer I think they will last for a long time.  Overall, I was really impressed with the shoes, the waterproof element alone was more than enough to justify the cost.

I was sent the boots to review, but I only ever accept items for review which I would purchase myself and views are all honest and my own

I am a traveller, mother and blogger. We love to go on adventures (big and small, near and far) and strive to show our children how amazing and beautiful the world is! I caught the travel bug many moons ago and despite having three little adventurers, I still suffer from "itchy" feet. We love the great outdoors and one another. Come and join the fun :)

  1. As a Beaver leader it was nice to read a fellow blogger’s review mention they also lead in a Scout section. I just got new walking trainers/boots to use during my leading and I much prefer them than full height boots.
