MOKURU – New Playground Craze & Perfect Travel Toy

MOKURU

We travel all over the globe with our little adventurers in tow and are always looking for ideal travelling toys which are small, non electronic and can occupy our little adventurers fr various things from long travel journeys, restaurants, waiting on tours, the list is endless.  My little adventurers love fidget spinners and when we saw there was a new toy, MOKURU which has taken Japan by storm we knew we had to give it a try. Here’s what we thought

What is MOKURU?

MOKURU is a handheld wooden toy about the size of cricket wicket bails and was created to test the dexterity of fast fingered flippers everywhere. The design is really simple, made from beech wood and ideally small enough to fit in a pocket or a handbag, its a perfect toy for those on the go and perfect for all ages.  MOKURU is available in black or in Japanese, Genbu, green (Matcha), orange, (Kirin) white (Byakko), red (Suzaku), blue (Seiryu) and yellow (Inazuma).

So what did we think?

Since having our MOKURU to test we have all been trying to have a go at mastering the technique.  Doc and I had a play for a few days and were in all honesty rubbish at it. We let the little adventurers have a play and within the space of an hour they had perfected the technique and were challenging one another to see who could the roll the MOKURU for longest.  We even had my older nephews (aged 11 and 16) give it a whirl and they got caught up in the game as much as the little adventurers.  Our little adventurers are taking it in turns to take it into school to show their friends, but we are ordering another two as they are perfect for our little adventures and I can see them really enjoying them.

What I love about the toy and what makes it perfect for us as a travelling family is:

Size: it is perfect just to put in your pocket, so even when we go without any bags for something to eat, watch a show etc it is small enough to fit into our or the little adventurers pocket

Restaurant fun: We always are well prepared with activities when we are out and about but sometimes it feels like we take over the whole table and appear very messy.  The MOKURU is designed as a table top activity and is perfect for smaller spaces and also creates no mess!

Multi-play: I love that the MOKURU lends itself to be played together, whether it is the challenge who can flip it the longest, flipping to one another or making a chain of flippers, it means that our little adventurers are all able to use the one toy.

Its perfect for airports and hand luggage: with the new electronics ban, I know lots of parents are looking for alternatives and this is an ideal toy to take with you.  The MOKURU is perfect for the waiting around in airports…we have been in queues for hours at a time and the little adventurers could now easily take this ou and play as we wait.  It also will be compliant to all the hand luggage regulations and perfect for the journey.

Longevity: Unlike the fidget spinner craze, the things and tasks you can do with the MOKURU seems to make it a much longer to play with.  There is a video on the MOKURU website which shows all the different levels, techniques and activities you can do with the MOKURU until you are a MOKURU master!

Where to purchase

The official MOKURU is now available at amazon and Smyths toys.  For parents looking to purchase these for their children just be aware that there are lots of fakes around, so I would take time to ensure that product is the official one and the imitations though cheaper fail to achieve the right balance and weight of the official MOKURU.

My little adventurers are a little in love with the product and I am just about to order two additional ones for our children, it shows they were a resounding hit in our house!  I cant wait to see how quickly the kids manage to master the skills 🙂

+We were provided a MOKURU for the review but as always we only review products we would buy ourselves and are going to buy two more MOKURUs so they have one each!

I am a traveller, mother and blogger. We love to go on adventures (big and small, near and far) and strive to show our children how amazing and beautiful the world is! I caught the travel bug many moons ago and despite having three little adventurers, I still suffer from "itchy" feet. We love the great outdoors and one another. Come and join the fun :)
