Italy with young children

With the arrival of the little adventurers, part of our holiday planning now involves us spending a lot of time ensuring that the chosen destination will offer enough family activities and adventures and is an appropriate choice for travelling with children.  One place that has always come to mind when I think of family friendly locations is Italy.  The country has so many amazing places to visit, its a true delight for adults and children alike.  However, I think parents of younger children often discount Italy in favour of other destinations fearing that it may not be an appropriate holiday babies and toddlers.  However, I think that Italy is a great place to visit with children and I have provided some reasons below why families should visit Italy with young children.

Italians love children

Italians have a true and genuine love of the family unit and children are welcomed open armed in most places in Italy.  Parents, especially those with little children need not fret about the noise and ‘nuisance’ factor some other places or cultures place on having children with you.  Despite taking my little adventurers to lots of places, I still worry about the noise that the children make when we are out in restaurants etc and its a refreshing change to experience a truly accepting culture.  This factor alone makes Italy even more appealing as it is the norm for Italians to be out with their children and are welcoming to children in every way possible.

Italy has such an awe inspiring history and remnants of its glorious past are present throughout the country.  In the Umbria area you are spoilt for choice with many ruins of castles scattered throughout the area.  In Lippiano they have a castle which looks amazing for little adventurers to explore.  Hands on history is such an amazing way to pass on knowledge to even the youngest of children and it is much more fun then museums and reading about it.  Clambering around the ruins and seeing it first hand makes for timeless memories.

Culture & colour

Italy has such a rich and varied culture which is readily visible to visitors through aspects of everyday Italian life.  Little adventurers will delight in all the amazing colours that are visible, the glorious smells and food and sounds of a times past.  Tuscany is awash with ancient villages and is a great choice to experience a country with such a varied past which is still included in their daily life but with the comforts that one would associate with modern life in Europe.

Countryside

Italy has amazing, beautiful countryside which is so varied throughout the country.  From the stunning Lakes of Como and Garda, the Amalfi coast and gorgeous islands, families will be spoilt for choice.  The stunning countryside is truly visible in the Tuscan and Umbria area.  Hiring a car provides families with even more options when exploring this area and they can make it perfectly work around their own pace and family needs.  In the area of Umbria, families are on the border and within so many places that they will be spoilt for choice with the likes of Tuscany, Florence, Perugia, Pisa and Siena are all within travelling distance if you fancy a day trip to some truly amazing places.

Ice Cream

For any holiday to be complete, ice cream is a must and in copious amounts.  Ice cream is in a different league in Italy and gelato is available everywhere often in endless flavour options that will make choosing just one flavour an arduous task 🙂  Having sampled some of the ice cream in Rome, you will be spoilt for choice!!

We think Italy has so much to offer families and would be an ideal choice regardless of the age of the children.  We cannot wait to go on a road trip around this amazing country and Tuscany is one of the items on my bucket list.

Nisbah

I am a traveller, mother and blogger. We love to go on adventures (big and small, near and far) and strive to show our children how amazing and beautiful the world is! I caught the travel bug many moons ago and despite having three little adventurers, I still suffer from "itchy" feet. We love the great outdoors and one another. Come and join the fun :)

  1. I completely agree with everything you’ve written! Italy is my favourite country and we’ve yet to take Monkey there. I know we won’t be able to get him out of a gelato shop! We’re thinking of Sicily next year! Great post
